The safety and security of  heavy haulage transportation is a global wide concern. If proper procedures are not followed, it can lead to another accident on the road. This is why shipping companies make good use of escort vehicles when certain criteria for heavy loads are met.

Escort vehicles are used to accompany heavy haulage transports to provide additional warning to drivers on the road. It helps establish the potential safety risks involved in transports of a higher degree. As with every vehicle; there are certain guidelines that escort vehicles must follow.

  • Wheels- An escort vehicle should have a minimum of four wheels.

  • Visibility- The driver of the escort vehicle should maintain clear visibility. This includes clear visibility to each side, as well as the rear. There should be windows in the rear and sides of the escort vehicle.

  • Colour- The colour of the escort vehicle should be yellow. This colour is seen as a warning to drivers on the road.

  • Lights- The escort vehicle for a heavy haulage transport should have two flashing or rotating lights that are placed on the roof. They should be amber in colour and on independent electrical circuits. They may only be used when the vehicle is in route with the heavy haulage transport vehicle.

  • Equipment- Escort vehicles have minimum equipment requirements that they must abide by. Their vehicles must contain a fire extinguisher and eight traffic cones. There must be a communication channel between the escort and the driver of the heavy haulage transport vehicle. This communication must be able to be used hands-free.

  • Front- The front of the escort vehicle should have red and white retro-reflective stripes that are placed diagonally. They should be ten to twelve centimeters wide.

  • Rear-The rear of the escort vehicle should also have red and white retro-reflective stripes that are placed diagonally. These should also be ten to twelve centimeters in width.

  • Sides-The sides of the escort vehicle should have red and white (or red and yellow) retro-reflective stickers placed on it. They should be in the shape of an open arrow. These arrows should point to the front of the vehicle.
